Private tour of Billingsgate Roman bath house with CBA London
Having last visited in 2012, CBA London will return to Billingsgate in the City on 30th March 2019 to explore the only publicly accessible Roman bath house in London. The remains of a house and suite of bath facilities were first discovered in 1854 during development of the Victorian Coal Exchange. Through building projects ever since, the archaeological site has been retained, studied and conserved, and is currently under a 1970s office block. Finds from the site range from Roman coins to a rare Saxon brooch.
Howard Benge of the City of London will explain the context of the bath house within Roman London, the history of investigation, the suggested chronology of construction of the house and bath and its significance. Join us to explore this hidden treasure.
Further details of arrangements for the event will be sent to those booking. Note that this below-ground site is only accessible via stairs.
Note: this event is currently only open to CBA London members. If you are a member, you will have received an email with a link to purchase tickets. CBA London members will initially have priority for booking this event, and can book for themselves and one guest. If places remain after 20th March, we will open booking to the public. If the event becomes sold out, we will operate a waiting list. Please note that our policy is only to give refunds where the place can be filled from the waiting list.
